Yang’s Noodles on Stockton Boulevard

Christmas came early for me in 2013: the same week that Beyoncé’s excellent new record came out I discovered Yang’s Noodles on Stockton Blvd. I love Chinese food, and part of what I love about it is that there is so much to learn that it could be a lifelong pursuit. There is almost limitless variation between the diverse regional cuisines — Hunan, Sichuan, Fujian, Guangdong (Cantonese), etc. Until recently, most of the Chinese food in Sacramento was from Guangdong, but Yang’s Noodles is a Taiwanese restaurant. One of the neat things about Taiwanese cuisine is that it pulls together food from various parts of China; at Yang’s its mostly northern food, but also has some Hunan and Sichuan dishes on the menu.

One of my favorite things on the menu so far is the Chinese Beef Roll, which is a flaky pancake rolled around thin slices of beef, cilantro, cucumber, and scallions. I had this for the first time down south in San Gabriel and couldn’t be more thrilled that I can eat in Sacramento!

Da Lu.

The Da Lu is a comforting chicken broth-based soup with wide wheat noodles, pork, egg, wood ear mushrooms, cabbage, and scallion. The stars of this dish were the noodles, which are house made and delicious, but I preferred them in the Beef Noodle Soup, which was rich and flavorful. The Sour Cabbage and Fried Pork was tasty and sour, the Five Spice Bean Curd were “so-so” smoked tofu sticks, the Pickled Cucumber (small spice) was awesome – more reminiscent of a European pickle than the pickled cucumber dish I’m used to getting at Chinese restaurants, they were tart and delicious and not very spicy. The Smoked Meat Wrapped in Bread was similar to the Beef Roll, but flat. The Chinese Cabbage and Pork dumplings were tasty, but not mind-blowing.

On my next visit I’ll be ordering the Sichuan Boiled Fish and Spicy Pork Stomach because that’s what my table neighbor ordered and it looked awesome. [Yang’s Noodles: 5860 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95824 (916) 392-9988]
